Short answer: You can teach yourself how to operate an FDM printer in just a few weeks. What you can hardly teach yourself on your own is how to design for 3D printing, systematically troubleshoot errors, and work with SLA and SLS. Self-study is enough for a hobby, a compact course for use in a company, and a training program with 600 instructional units—which can be up to 100 % state-subsidized—for a career change.

3D printing consists of four skills, and printing itself is the smallest of them. Whoever merely downloads ready-made files from the net and presses start is operating a device. Whoever sees a problem, designs a component for it, and produces it in usable quality has mastered the process.
The four skills:
Items 1 and 3 separate hobby and profession. A business does not hire someone who downloads files. It looks for someone who turns a sketch or a broken spare part into a functioning component. At Mach-3D, contract manufacturing runs alongside the academy. What matters there is precisely this chain from the inquiry to the inspected part.
Yes, for FDM and for hobby use, that works well. An entry-level FDM printer, free slicers, and video tutorials are enough to print clean parts after a few weeks.
Self-study has three limitations that we regularly see in applicants:
You are only learning one procedure. An FDM printer is almost always running at home. Resin printing (SLA) requires protective gear, ventilation, and a space for washing and post-curing. Nobody puts an SLS system, which sinters plastic powder with a laser, in their home office. In a business environment, however, you need to be able to decide which process is right for which part.
Nobody is correcting your construction. Videos show you how a command works. They don't show you that your part is positioned incorrectly in the build space and therefore breaks at a layer boundary. You will repeat mistakes like this for years if no one shows them to you.
You have no proof. An employer or the Employment Agency cannot do much with „I taught myself.“ A certificate detailing the number of hours and content is verifiable.
That does not mean that self-learning is worthless. On the contrary: anyone who has been 3D printing for a few weeks before the course gets significantly more out of the hands-on time at the machines because the basics are already understood.

Decide based on the goal, not the price. The table shows a direct comparison of the three paths. The information on courses and continuing education refers to our offerings.
| self-study | IHK certificate course | Further training (600 teaching units) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Hobby, first experience | Use 3D printing in your current job | Career change or new job |
| Duration | open | 2 weeks | 60 days: approx. 3 months full-time or approx. 7 months part-time |
| Proceeding | mostly FDM only | FDM, SLA, SLS, 3D-Scanning | FDM, SLA, SLS in one module each with 200 teaching units |
| Location | home | Week 1 remote, week 2 in the workshop near Kiel | Online, each module includes one on-site week in Altenholz |
| Feedback | Forums, videos | Instructors, a project from A to Z | Lecturers across 3 modules |
| Proof | nobody | IHK Certificate (IHK Academy of Business Schleswig-Holstein) | Certificate from an AZAV-certified provider |
| Financing | even | self-funded or employer-funded, eligible for educational leave | Education voucher up to 100 %, federal volunteer service, self-payers with installments |
A crash course is enough if you already have a profession and want to use 3D printing as a tool there. Typical cases: You work in maintenance and want to manufacture spare parts and fixtures yourself. You are in development and no longer want to outsource prototypes. Your company bought a printer, and it has been sitting in the corner for months.
Our IHK certificate course lasts two weeks, which means ten working days. Week 1 is remote: CAD in Fusion 360 from scratch, parametric modeling, design for 3D printing, slicing, and materials science. Week 2 takes place in Kiel, working with the machines. You will plan printing processes, identify and troubleshoot errors, post-process workpieces, import scan data into CAD, and implement a complete project.
The advantage of this structure: You are only absent from your workplace on-site for one week. The course can be used as educational leave. How this works is explained in the article Using educational leave for the IHK certificate course.
The honest limit: Two weeks make you capable of acting, not experienced. After that, you know all three procedures firsthand and can pull off a project. The routine comes on the job.

It is worthwhile if 3D printing is going to be your profession and not just a tool. 600 instructional periods of 45 minutes each equal 450 clock hours. During this time, you will go through each of the three processes in a dedicated module with 200 instructional periods over 20 days. A full-time day runs from about 8:00 AM to about 4:00 PM.
There are three directions:
A university degree is not a requirement. You need basic computer skills, an affinity for technology, and German at about a B1 level.
The second reason is money. The academy is AZAV-certified, which means the Employment Agency or Job Center can fund the continuing education up to 100 % using an education voucher. Temporary career soldiers go through the German Armed Forces Career Advancement Service. How to apply is explained in the guide on applying for an education voucher.
To put the perspective into context, on our site we state these ranges: starting salaries from 32,000 to 45,000 € per year, experienced professionals 3,000 to 4,000 € per month. These are benchmark values, not a guarantee. Industry, region, and prior experience shift them significantly.
Start with CAD, not with buying the printer. That is the advice we give most often, and it surprises most people. A printer without your own design just produces decoration. Your own design without a printer can be printed at any time by a service provider or in a class.
A sequence that works:
If you realize after two weeks that you enjoy designing, that is the strongest signal for a career path in 3D printing.
You will be operating an FDM printer after just a few weeks. For all three processes, including design, troubleshooting, and post-processing, we have scheduled 600 training units over 60 days in our continuing education program.
During the classroom weeks, you will work on our machines in Altenholz.
A CAD program. For us, that's Autodesk Fusion 360. You'll learn slicers like PrusaSlicer or Cura much faster afterward because you understand what's inside the model.
Yes. The advanced training courses are available part-time over about seven months. The IHK certificate course only requires one week of attendance in Kiel.
You can teach yourself FDM operation. Design for additive manufacturing, systematic troubleshooting, and working with SLA and SLS are best learned through feedback and on real machines. For use in your current job, a two-week IHK certificate course is enough. For a career change, 600 teaching units are the viable path, and with an education voucher or BFD, you don't have to pay for them yourself.
